Frequently Asked Questions
Question:  When does the school day begin and end?
Answer:     Students are to be in home base by 7:35 am.  Teachers are on duty to monitor student movement and activity at 7:10 am.  The school day ends at 2:20 pm.  After-school tutoring sessions end at 4:00 pm.
Question:  What is the price of school lunch?
Answer:     Daily lunch prices for students in grades 6 through 12 is $2.25.
Question:  What is the procedure if there is an early dismissal for inclement weather?
Answer:     In the event school is dismissed before the end of the school day because of snow, ice, or other inclement weather, an announcement will be made.  Students who ride the bus or ride in private vehicles will remain in class until dismissed.  Students will be allowed to use the telephone to call for a ride home.
Question:  What are the procedures for distribution of medications at school?   
Answer:     All students who require medication during the school day must have a medication form signed by their physician and returned to the main office at Grandview.  Medication forms may be obtained from the secretaries in the main office area.
Question:  What is the procedure for checking my son or daughter out of school?
Answer:     Parents/guardians must have photo identification and be listed on student information cards as a guardian or an emergency contact person.
Question:  May my son/daughter ride a bicycle or skateboard to Grandview?  May my child walk to school?
Answer:    No.  For safety reasons all students who attend Grandview must either ride a car or school bus.
Question:  How do I sign my child up for after school homework assistance?
Answer:    Students who wish to participate in the after school homework assistance program (Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM) must present a homework assistance permission form to the assistant principal prior to the first day the student plans to participate.  The permission form must include a parent signature.  Students may either ride a school bus from Grandview or parents may pick up students at 3:30 PM.  After school homework assistance forms may be obtained from the main office secretaries.
Question: What are the dress code requirements?
Answer: The Hickory Board of Education adopted a standardized dress code for students in grades 6 – 12 to minimize disruptive behavior, increase school safety, de-emphasize socio-economic differences, easily identify intruders on campus, and enhance school image. Students attending the Hickory Public Schools in grades 6 through 12 will adhere to the following standardized dress code each school day during the entire school day.

Acceptable tops include:
Short or long sleeve knit shirts with bottom-centered plackets,
Collared short or long sleeve dress shirts
All shirts must be tucked in.
Acceptable colors are all solid color without any logos.  

Acceptable bottoms include:
Pants, capris, skirts, skorts or shorts
No cargo pants or leggings of any color are allowed
No blue denim jeans
Bottoms should be knee length or longer and worn at the waist
Belt must be standard hook and eye or interlocking rings.  The belt tail cannot hand down lower than four inches.  Large belt buckles are not allowed.
Acceptable colors are khaki, black, or navy.
Please Note:
No bedroom slippers are to be worn to school.
No visible logos allowed on any clothing with the exception of the school logo.
Each Friday, students may wear t-shirts and/or sweatshirts that have a club, class or athletic theme associated with their respective school.

New or transfer students shall have up to 7 calendar days to meet dress code requirements.
